2002 Silky Terrier Specialty
The 2002 National Specialty is now one for the record books - and what a show it was! With a total of 29 Silkys in competition making up a total of 68 entries, it was the largest entry of Silky Terriers ever to compete in Canada.
We plan to add pictures of the winners as we receive them, but in the meantime, here is a write-up by the Club President; Val VanKoesveld, and details of the proud winners:
The MLSTC held its 10th National Specialty in conjunction with the Mount Cheam Canine Association September 20, 21, 22. We had 29 Silkys for a total of 68 entries. Our thanks to Anne Wallace who along with our Show Secretary; Kim Campbell of Western Dog Shows, organized and co-ordinated the whole event, and our thanks to Mount Cheam Canine Assciation for allowing us to hold our National Specialty in conjunction with their show and for sharing their judging panel with us.
The Mount Cheam Canine Association assigned us a fairly large area where we set up tables for our silent auction and a table at the back for coffee, pop, etc. Nancy Rylan had had a large banner made up welcoming everyone to our Specialty, with the MLSTC emblem placed on both sides. It looked fantastic on the grey backdrop. Our silent auction tables were the border of our area.
We set up our silent auction Thursday night so everything would be ready to start for Saturday. I must thank Val & Alan Gustus for taking charge of the Silent Auction table and looking after it for us - we couldn't have done it without you and along with Cliff Holland acted as host and hostess and helped where it was needed, even holding dogs and getting dogs to ringside. By the way, guys, how big was that fish???

Saturday afternoon a beautiful and very delicious cake arrived which was enjoyed by us all and by visitors to the booth alike.
Our Specialty was slated for 6:00 p.m. and we were able to start on time - our judge was Mrs. E.B. Maitland from Australia. We had a entry of 29 Silkys. There was a wonderful crowd of friends and family and other "doggy people", who were enthusiastic and seemed to be enjoying themselves.
At this time I want to mention Heather Somers - she hand made the majority of our trophies - and they were absolutely gorgeous. She made small wall hangings for first place in each class which were Silkys done in Pretty Punch work and the BISS award was a Silky Head done in cross stitch and all awards were framed. Anne Wallace had ordered lovely ribbons and Roxanne Aeichelle had crocheted crate pads to match the awards. Our trophy table was beautiful and much admired.

Two very special Silkys!! The hit of the show!!
After some of the excitement died down and some pictures were taken, we all gathered at the booth for a pizza party. And anyone attending the Specialty was invited to join. I should at this time thank Nancy Rylan for ordering all the food. The pizza was yummy and enjoyed by all. Nancy organized all the food and bought all the supplies - wonderful food and great job! A couple of special awards were also given out: Donna Renton received a prize for having travelled the furthest to get to the show, and "Arrow" (Tawny Mist Straight To The Mark) received a basket of "goodies" for the Silky who came the furthest to attend the show - Alaska to Oregon to Chilliwack.

The silent auction had closed on Saturday afternoon. On the Sunday, some people still were picking up their goodies. The Silkys showed late that day and congratulations to Am.Can.Inter.Ch. Tawny Mist Fortune Hunter for taking the Breed. Chase and Dinah went on to a Group 2 as well. Best Opposite that day was Can.Ch. Pen-Ken Lazuli's Blu owned by Anne and Katherine Wallace.
