Membership Information
Our Club has two levels of membership:
1. ORDINARY. Must be Canadian Citizen and must be sponsored by another Ordinary member within the Club. They remain as "Associate" members for a one year trial period. If during that time there have been no upheld concerns expressed by other members, then they will be given Ordinary status. Ordinary members have full voting rights within the Club and are eligible to hold Office.
2. ASSOCIATE. Members have no voting rights and are ineligible to hold Office. This is the category for those who live outside Canada or, those who are planning to get a Silky but don't know anyone to sponsor them yet.
Both types of memberships receive our bi-monthly newsletter "Soft As Silk" and are eligible for any Club Awards for which they may qualify.
If you would like to apply for either Ordinary or Associate Membership, you should read the Code Of Ethics below, and then click to get to a printable copy of our Membership Application Form. When you have completed the form return it to the Secretary along with the required fee. Your name will be published in the newsletter for the approval of our members. If no negative feedback is received during that time, your membership will be approved.
PLEASE NOTE: Some people are emailing the form to the Secretary and that is NOT acceptable. You must print out the form, complete it and sign it before mailing it in, as well as get your sponsors signature if you have one. Plus, the payment must be included with your application. Without your signature and payment the application is invalid and will NOT be processed.
CODE OF ETHICS
Canon of Ethics:
a. This Code of Ethics is devised in accordance with the aims, objectives, and regulations of the Canadian Kennel Club.
b. Each member of the Maple Leaf Silky Terrier Club (National) Inc. has an obligation to protect the interests of the Silky terrier by conducting himself in a manner designed to reflect credit upon himself, the Silky Terrier, and on the Maple Leaf Silky Terrier Club (National) Inc.
c. No member will deliberately degrade any fancier or his kennel operation by making false or misleading statements.
d. All members shall conduct themselves in a professional manner within the precincts of any show that they may attend, and shall exhibit good sportsmanship at all times.
e. All members shall help educate the public in the standard and care of the Silky Terrier and in all other areas where he is qualified.
f. It is considered unethical for any M.L.S.T.C. member to sell dogs to, or buy dogs from, or breed dogs with, and pet shop, or any wholesaler dealing in dogs: or to knowing sell to, or buy dogs from, or breed dogs with, any breeder who sells to pet shops: or to allow his stock to become raffle, lottery or competition prizes.
g. It shall be considered unethical for any member of the Maple Leaf Silky Terrier Club to sell, give or otherwise dispose of a live dog, by placing it in a research facility of any kind.
h. It is considered unethical for any member of the Maple Leaf Silky Terrier Club to knowingly sell, give or otherwise place a dog, in a home known to place dogs in research facilities of any kind.
i. Members of the Maple Leaf Silky Terrier Club (National) Inc. will maintain the best possible standard of care for all dogs for which they are responsible.
Responsibilities of the Breeder:
The breeder shall -
a. Be familiar with the breed standard and use this knowledge in his breeding program.
b. Use for breeding only dogs which are mentally stable, physically healthy and believed to be free from any serious congenital and/or hereditary defects.
c. Produce puppies only when he has the time and facilities to provide adequate attention to physical and mental development until such time as they are transferred to their new homes.
d. Not sell a puppy before it is eight weeks old and has had its first inoculations.
e. Breed a bitch only if she is in robust health and mature.
f. Never breed a bitch more often than is prudently necessary, and never breed a bitch more than two seasons in a row.
g. Never let a bitch raise, unaided, more puppies than she can handle.
Responsibilities of the Stud Owner:
The stud owner shall -
a. Not offer at stud a dog known to carry or manifest genes of structure or temperament considered detrimental to the breed and contrary to the standard, unless said defects are made known to the owner of the bitch.
b. Not accept for breeding any bitch, the reproduction of which is likely to be detrimental to the breed. The offspring of a breeding should be a credit to the breed and to ourselves.
c. Not breed a bitch before she is physically and mentally mature.
d. Refrain from breeding a bitch owned by a party known to sell to pet shops, pet dealers or other sources of distribution; or who allow their stock to become raffle, lottery or competition prizes.
e. Make every effort to inform the owner of the bitch of the responsibilities of involvement in the rearing and proper care and placement of puppies resulting from this breeding.
f. When a puppy (ies) is taken in lieu of stud fee or as part of breeding terms, be fully responsible for the condition of the puppy at the time of the sale and not sell such puppy unseen.
Responsibilities of the Seller:
The seller shall -
a. Be willing to cover all sales by a written contract - listing registration number of sire and dam and litter registration number (if available), condition of sale, description of quality of dog, complete health record, and three generation pedigree.
b. Inform the buyer that the newly purchased dog be examined by the buyers veterinarian (at buyers expense) within 48 hours of sale. If, as a result of this examination, the dog is returned to the seller for health reasons within this period, the seller must refund the cost of the dog.
c. Sell a dog showing deviation from the standard, rendering it unsuitable for breeding, only if surgically neutered, on a C.K.C. non-breeding agreement or on a written spay/neuter agreement.
d. Be morally obligated to refund purchase price of a show prospect to an agreed-upon pet puppy price, or replace any show prospect dog, at the sellers option, if it shows a serious congenital or hereditary defect within the first 24 months of age (diagnosed by a competent veterinarian) rendering it unsuitable for showing and/or breeding.
e. Be obligated to buy-back or replace, at the sellers option, any pet puppy if it developed any genetic defect within the first 24 months of age which prevents its being a healthy, happy pet.
f. Offer assistance in training and grooming to all buyers, and maintain a friendly follow-up interest to insure satisfaction.
